Melartin must have received Larin Kyösti’s text ahead of time directly from the poet before the official publication of the poem in 1912. The song, originally finished in July of 1911 for mixed choir, caused the poet to write to the composer in April of the following year and hurry him to complete the male choir version: “Please complete the May Day Song and make sure that the The YL Male Voice Choir sing it already this May Day, let’s hope that it will become a permanent May Day song.” The memorable chorus: “Now it’s May Day!” and the naturally uplifting curve of the verses make the song a genuine spring song.

Melartin lienee saanut Larin-Kyöstin tekstin etuajassa suoraan runoilijalta ennen runon virallista julkaisua 1912. Alun perin heinäkuussa 1911 sekakuorolle valmistunut laulu sai runoilijan kirjoittamaan säveltäjälle seuraavan vuoden huhtikuussa ja kiiruhtamaan mieskuoroversion valmistumista: ”Laita nyt pian vappulaulu valmiiksi ja toimita, että Ylioppilaslaulajat sen jo tänä vappuna laulavat ja toivotaan, että siitä tulisi pysyvä vappulaulu.” Mieleenpainuva kertosäe ”Nyt Vappu on!” ja säkeiden luontevasti kohottava kaarros tekevät laulusta aidon kevätlaulun.
