Perún is a mature masterpiece of the 23-year-old Melartin. The work, which participated in the composition competition of the Muntra Musikanter male choir in 1898, but did not receive an award, is one of the author’s most impressive male choir songs. The poem of the Finnish-Swedish poet Mikael Lybeck about the Slavic God of Thunder and Lightning is repeated in ancient mythology around the world: in India the phenomena of the firmament are ruled by Varuna, in Greece by Uranus, in Germany by Thor and the Perún in the Slavic mythology. The story, set on the rocky shores of Kiev, tells the story of Prince Vladimir, who dares to overthrow the image of a worshipped pagan god. Young Melartin has not been immune to Central European influences. The bass comes in with ‘Helig, helig vi se dig, Herre!’ -verse, in which the people praise Vladimir, who rides proudly on the back of his horse, is Wagnerism at its purest. However, the singer of the poem dares to warn the victorious conqueror of the power and revenge of the god of Perún: “You have only crushed his image, the lightning will reach you even from your princely seat!” The song has not been printed or reportedly released. There is no information about the premiere.

Perún on 23-vuotiaan Melartinin kypsä taidonnäyte. Muntra Musikanter -mieskuoron sävellyskilpailuun 1898 osallistunut, mutta palkinnotta jäänyt teos kuuluu tekijänsä vaikuttavimpiin mieskuorolauluihin. Suomenruotsalaisen runoilijan Mikael Lybeckin runo slaavilaisesta ukkosen ja salaman jumalasta toistuu muinaistarustoissa ympäri maailman: intialaisilla taivaan kannen ilmiöitä hallitsee Varuna, kreikkalaisilla Uranus, germaaneilla Thor ja slaaveilla Perún. Kievin kallioisille rannoille sijoittuva tarina kertoo ruhtinas Vladimirista, joka uskaltaa kaataa palvotun pakanajumalan kuvan. Nuori Melartin ei ole ollut immuuni keskieurooppalaisille vaikutteille. Bassoäänien aloittama Helig, helig vi se dig, herre! -taite, jossa kansa ylistää hevosensa selässä ylväänä ratsastavaa Vladimiria, on wagnerismia puhtaimmillaan. Runon laulaja uskaltaa kuitenkin varoittaa voittoisaa valloittajaa Perún-jumalan mahdista ja kostovoimasta: ”Olet murskannut vain hänen kuvansa, salama kyllä tavoittaa sinut vaikka ruhtinaanistuimeltasi!” Laulua ei ole painettu eikä tiettävästi julkaistu.
