Eino Leino’s poem Me kasvamme Kalevan juuresta (We Grow from the Root of Kalevala) from 1899 inspired Melartin to write an uplifting choir song. The Swedish translation comes from the pen of K. V. Forsman or Tekla Roschier. In his composition, Melartin used verses 2, 5, and 1 of Leino’s poem, respectively. The YL Male Voice Choir premiered the song on April 26, 1906. We Grow was chosen in 1926 as the great choir song of the Sortavala Song Festival, no doubt because of its strong message: without the support of each other and the desire to pull in the same direction “we collapse like a handful of sand”. Melartin’s sense of drama is unmistakable: carefully selected repetitions of harmonies and unison support the underlining of the text.

Eino Leinon runo Me kasvamme Kalevan juuresta (Vi växa på Kalevas fria strand) vuodelta 1899 innoitti Melartinin kirjoittamaan kohottavan suurkuorolaulun. Ruotsinkielinen käännös on peräisin K. V. Forsmanin tai Thekla Roschierin kynästä. Sävellykseensä Melartin käytti Leinon runosta säkeistöt 2, 5 ja 1 tässä järjestyksessä. Ylioppilaskunnan Laulajat ensiesitti laulun 26.4.1906. Sortavalan laulujuhlien suurkuorolauluksi Me kasvamme valittiin 1926 epäilemättä vahvan sanomansa vuoksi: ilman toistemme tukemista ja halua puhaltaa yhteen hiileen ”sorrumme niin kuin santa”. Melartinin dramatiikan taju on pettämätön: tarkasti valikoidut harmonioiden toistot ja unisonot tukevat tekstin alleviivauksia.
