“Mary dreams in the rose gardens” was composed in 1900 for the text by Viktor Rydberg and composed for the Muntra Musikanter male choir competition. The song took second place. The first prize was not awarded at all. Johan Alfred Lybäck, a Finnish-Swedish composer and church musician, arranged the song for the mixed choir in 1911. By combining modality and chromaticity, Melartin supports the miraculous nature of Rydberg’s poem. The atmosphere is condensed in strong contrasts: Mary dreams of motherhood in the sweet rose gardens where birds sing at a time when ominous storm clouds are gathering outside and the world is dying of strife and sin-ridden violence. While sewing red-rimmed swaddling clothes for the future martyr of the people, Mary manages to dream of peace and human rights on earth.

“Maria drömmer i rosengård” on sävelletty vuonna 1900 Viktor Rydbergin tekstiin ja tehty Muntra Musikanter -mieskuoron kilpailuun. Laulu sijoittui toiselle sijalle. Ensimmäistä palkintoa ei jaettu lainkaan. Johan Alfred Lybäck, suomenruotsalainen säveltäjä ja kirkkomuusikko sovitti laulun sekakuorolle 1911. Modaalisuutta ja kromaattisuutta yhdistelemällä Melartin tukee Rydbergin runon miraakkeliluonnetta. Tunnelma tiivistyy voimakkaissa vastakohdissa: samaan aikaan kun ulkona kerääntyvät mustanpuhuvat myrskypilvet ja maailma on kuolemassa riitoihin ja väkivaltaan Maria unelmoi äitiydestä linnunlaulun sulostuttamissa ruusutarhoissa. Punareunuksista kapaloa tulevalle kansanmarttyyrille ommellessaan Maria haaveilee rauhasta ja ihmisoikeuksista maan päällä.
