Kinnunen, Aino

Aino Kinnunen (b. 1998) is a Finnish musician, composer and teacher. She primarily works in the field of folk music and actively performs as a fiddler with several bands, including Polenta and NOOLI. Kinnunen holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Music from the Folk Music Department in the Sibelius Academy.

Kinnunen made her debut as a choral composer at the age of 18, when she composed the piece Kiven alla kieltäjäni for the Vaskivuori Upper Secondary School Chamber Choir, of which she was a member at the time. The same piece is available here in choralworks.fi. Since then, she has arranged and composed music for a cappella groups and choirs, as well as instrumental music for her own bands.

Influences from Finnish folk music are strongly present in Kinnunen’s music. She is inspired by the rhythms used in pelimanni-style playing, and through her compositions, she explores ways of interpreting those rhythms in choral music.
