Prat Vives, Carles

Carles Prat Vives (b.1985) is a versatile Spanish musician who combines his professional work as a composer, singer and conductor, with a particular specialisation in choral music.

His musical career began at the Escolania de Montserrat. He completed his studies in classical singing at the Escola Superior de Música de Catalunya (ESMUC) and obtained a Master’s degree in Opera from the Hochschule für Musik und Tanz Köln.

As a composer, he has a particular affinity for choral music. His extensive knowledge of the voice and the choral instrument has led a significant part of his compositional output to focus on choral music. His works, however, encompass a wide range of styles and instrumental and vocal formations. His catalogue includes works for solo instruments, chamber ensembles, orchestra, choir, organ, cobla, as well as traditional instruments.

His distinctions include two prizes at the AERCO Competition in Italy, first prize in both categories of the International Choral Composition Competition of the Palau de la Música Catalana, first prize at the Musica Sacra Nova Competition in Germany, and a prize at the Guido d’Arezzo International Competition, Tapiola Choir International Choral Composition Competition 2026, among many others.

Numerous ensembles have performed his works, including the Cor Francesc Valls de la Catedral de Barcelona, the National Chamber Choir Madrigal of Romania, Cor de Cambra del Palau de la Música, Ensemble O Vos Omnes, Tapiola Choir (Finland), Jauna Muzika Choras, Cor Pedrell, Orfeó Català, Anton Bruckner Chamber Choir, Ensemble Clásica, Cor de Noies del Palau de la Música Catalana, as well as Camerata Penedès, Cobla Principal de la Bisbal and Cobla Principal del Llobregat, among many others.

The prestigious vocal ensemble The King’s Singers premiered his work Spring, the sweet spring in 2021, following his award at the AERCO “My 50 First Years” Competition in Italy. This work, together with Winter Stars, which also received an award, will be published by Hal Leonard.

As a conductor, he has studied with conductors such as Josep Vila and Xavier Puig. He has served as principal conductor of the Francesc Valls Choir of Barcelona Cathedral and of Lux Ensemble, a group he founded himself. He has also conducted ensembles such as the Palau de la Música Vocal Quartet, Orquestra Terrassa 48, Camerata Penedès and Cor de Noies Exaudio.
